California Listed Seventh in First Annual Ranking of Bicycle Friendly States by John Bisnar

California was ranked 7th in the nation in the first annual ranking of Bicycle Friendly States by the League of American Bicyclists. Each state was scored on more than 70 factors that focused on 6 key areas: legislation, policies and programs, infrastructure, education and encouragement, evaluation and planning, and enforcement.

California was given high rankings because of its bike-safe rumble strip policy which leaves four feet of clearance for cyclists as well as having dedicated state funding for bicycle projects.

California has some of the best weather for biking in the United States, which makes it necessary to accommodate for cyclists. Thanks to careful planning and hard work, many of California’s cities have received recognition for their efforts in providing safe routes for cyclists:

* Davis was ranked 5th in Virgin Vacations’ 11 most bicycle friendly cities in the world and listed 4th by the Washington Post in their 10 Great Biking Cities article in 2006. Davis is often viewed as the best small town for cycling in the United States and was rated as a Platinum level bicycling community by the League of American Bicyclists.
* San Francisco was ranked 8th in Virgin Vacations’ 11 most bicycle friendly cities and 3rd by the Washington Post. The city also received an honorable mention by Bicycling Magazine as one of the best cities for biking in the US with a population between 500,000 and 1 million. San Francisco was rated a Gold level bicycling community by the League of American Bicyclists.
* Palo Alto was listed 5th in America’s Best Online top 10 cities for biking and earned a Gold rating by the League of American Bicyclists.
* San Diego was listed 7th in the top 10 list of bicycle cities compiled by AskMen.com. The city is considered an “Urban Treasure” by Bicycling Magazine, who called San Diego the best bicycling city with a population over 1 million.
* Folsom, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz were all rated as Silver level communities by the League of American Bicyclists.
* Arcata, Brentwood, Mountain View, the Presidio of San Francisco, Sacramento, San Jose, South Lake Tahoe, and Sunnyvale were all rated as Bronze level communities by the League of American Bicyclists.

While the state of California has put in a lot of effort to continuously improve the roads for cyclists, it still struggles by having high rates of accidents and fatalities. In 2006, which is the most recent year tracked by the California Highway Patrol, there were 151 fatal bike accidents in California and 10,352 injuries.

If you’re ever in a bicycle accident in California, you need a personal injury lawyer you can trust. By choosing an experienced attorney who specializes in bike accidents you can receive the full compensation the law and circumstances allow.
